Unlock PDF

Choose a protected PDF, enter its password and download a copy that opens without one. Files that only restrict printing or copying often unlock with no password at all.

Choose a protected PDF you know the password of.

About this tool

A PDF can carry two kinds of protection: a password required to open it, and owner restrictions that block printing, copying or editing while still letting anyone read it. The tool decrypts the file with the password you provide, or with an empty password for restriction-only files, and saves an unencrypted copy.

This is meant for documents you have the right to use: bank statements you no longer want to type a password for, forms that block filling, or archives protected by a colleague. It does not crack passwords; without the correct one the content cannot be decrypted.

Frequently asked questions

I forgot the password. Can the tool recover it?
No. The content is encrypted with a key derived from the password, and there is no shortcut. Ask the person who created the file.
The file opens without a password but I cannot print. Will this help?
Yes. Leave the password blank and unlock; owner-only restrictions are removed.
Which encryption types are supported?
RC4, AES-128 and AES-256, which covers every PDF produced since 2001.
Is the file or password uploaded?
No. Decryption runs in your browser; neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere.
