About this tool
Cheques, contracts, invoices and legal documents require amounts written in words to prevent tampering, and children's homework asks for numbers spelled out. Each language has its own rules: English hyphenates twenty-one, French writes quatre-vingt-dix-neuf and pluralises cents only at the end, German joins everything into one word, Spanish changes uno to un before nouns and millón to millones, Turkish drops the “bir” before bin.
The converter handles integers up to 999 quadrillion, negative numbers and decimals read digit by digit after the decimal word. It runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
- How are decimals read?
- Digit by digit after “point” (or its equivalent), which is how amounts are read aloud unambiguously. For currency, write the cents separately.
- Does it support ordinals like twenty-first?
- Not yet; cardinal numbers only.
- Which spelling conventions are used?
- British/American common forms without “and” in English, the 1990 reform hyphenation in French, and standard forms in Turkish, Spanish and German.
