About this tool
Character counts matter for anything with a hard limit: meta descriptions around 155 characters, page titles around 60, and social posts with their own caps. The counter shows totals both with and without spaces, since platforms differ on which they count.
Reading time is estimated at 225 words per minute and speaking time at 130 words per minute — the commonly used averages for silent reading and clear presentation pace.
Frequently asked questions
- How are words counted?
- The text is trimmed and split on any run of whitespace, so each group of non-space characters counts as one word. That matches how word processors count.
- Does it count characters with or without spaces?
- Both. The two figures are shown separately because character limits differ — Twitter counts spaces, some CMS fields do not.
- How is reading time calculated?
- Words divided by 225 words per minute, rounded up. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.
- How long should a meta description be?
- Roughly 150–160 characters. Longer descriptions get truncated in search results, so put the important part first.
- Is my text saved?
- No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
