About this tool

Roman numerals combine seven symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added together, except when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, where it is subtracted: IV is 4 and XC is 90. Only I, X and C may be used as subtractive prefixes.

The system has no zero and no standard way to write numbers above 3,999 without extra notation such as an overline, which is why this converter stops there. Roman numerals still appear on clock faces, in film copyright dates, book chapters, monarch names and Super Bowl titles.

Frequently asked questions

What is 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: two thousands (MM), two tens (XX), a five (V) and a one (I).
Why is IIII rejected?
The converter accepts only the standard subtractive form, so 4 must be written IV. Clock faces that show IIII use an older, decorative convention.
How do I write 1999?
MCMXCIX: M (1000), CM (900), XC (90) and IX (9).
What is the largest Roman numeral?
In standard notation, MMMCMXCIX, which is 3,999. Larger values need an overline, which multiplies a symbol by 1,000.
