About this tool
Course grades are rarely a plain average: homework may count 20%, midterms 30%, the final 40%. The weighted grade multiplies each score by its weight and divides by the total weight entered, so it works even before every component is in. Weights do not have to add up to 100.
The final-exam mode answers the question every student asks in the last week: what do I need? It assumes the entries so far cover the rest of the course and solves for the score on a final with the given weight. A result above 100 means the target is out of reach; a result at or below zero means you have already made it.
Frequently asked questions
- My weights do not add up to 100. Is that a problem?
- No. The current grade is computed over the weights entered. For the final-exam mode, the final's weight plus the existing components are treated as the whole course.
- Can I use points instead of percentages?
- Convert to percent first (score ÷ maximum × 100), or enter the maximum points as the weight if every item is scored out of a different total.
- What if I need more than 100% on the final?
- The target is not reachable through the final alone. Ask about extra credit or adjust the target.
