About this tool
Fraction arithmetic follows a few rules: to add or subtract, bring both to a common denominator; to multiply, multiply straight across; to divide, multiply by the reciprocal. The result is then reduced by the greatest common divisor so 6/8 becomes 3/4, and shown as a mixed number (1 3/4) and a decimal for checking.
Decimal-to-fraction conversion uses continued fractions, which finds the simplest fraction within a denominator limit: 0.375 gives 3/8, 0.333333 gives 1/3, and 3.14159 gives 355/113. Results are exact for terminating decimals and marked approximate otherwise.
