About this tool
The rates come from the European Central Bank, which publishes reference rates for about thirty currencies every working day around 16:00 CET. They are mid-market rates: the midpoint between buying and selling prices on the interbank market, which is what news sites and most converters quote.
The rate you get from a bank, card or exchange office will differ. Providers add a spread of anything from 0.5% to 5% and sometimes a fixed fee, so use the reference rate to judge whether an offer is fair rather than as the exact amount you will receive.
Frequently asked questions
- How often are the rates updated?
- Once per working day, after the ECB publishes its reference rates. Weekends and public holidays show the last published rate.
- Why is the result different from my bank?
- Banks and card issuers add a margin on top of the mid-market rate. The difference is their fee for the exchange.
- Which currencies are supported?
- The ones the ECB publishes: EUR, USD, GBP, TRY, JPY, CHF, CAD, AUD, CNY, INR and about twenty more European and Asian currencies.
- Is anything sent to a server?
- Only the request for the day's rates, which goes to a public rates API. The amount you type stays on your device.
