About this tool
Adding VAT is a multiplication: net × (1 + rate). Removing it is a division, not a subtraction — that is the mistake most people make. Taking 20% off a gross amount gives the wrong answer, because the 20% was charged on the smaller net figure.
Rates differ by country and by product: reduced bands for food, books and transport sit alongside the standard rate. The preset buttons cover the common European and Turkish rates; type any other rate directly.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I remove VAT from a total?
- Divide by 1 plus the rate. At 20% VAT, divide the gross amount by 1.2 to get the net amount; the difference is the VAT.
- Why can't I just subtract 20%?
- Because the 20% was calculated on the net amount, not the gross one. Subtracting 20% from a gross figure understates the net by about 4%.
- How do I add VAT to a price?
- Multiply the net amount by 1 plus the rate. At 18% VAT, a net 1,000 becomes a gross 1,180.
- Which rate should I use?
- The one that applies to your product in your country. Standard rates are typically 18–25% in Europe, with reduced bands of 1–10% for essentials.
