About this tool
A percentage discount is worked out by multiplying the price by the percentage and dividing by 100. A 25% discount on 80 saves 20, so the final price is 60. When two discounts are stacked, apply them one after the other rather than adding the percentages: 20% then 10% is 28% off in total, not 30%.
Reversing the calculation shows how good a deal really is. If an item marked 120 sells for 90, the saving is 30, which is 25% of the original. The tip mode uses the same maths on a bill and divides the total between diners, rounding to cents.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate 20% off a price?
- Multiply the price by 0.2 to get the saving, then subtract it. 20% off 50 is 50 − 10 = 40. Or multiply directly by 0.8.
- How do I find the percentage off from two prices?
- Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From 120 to 90: (120 − 90) / 120 × 100 = 25%.
- Does the calculator include sales tax?
- No. Enter prices as shown on the tag; if tax is added at checkout, apply it to the discounted price afterwards using the VAT calculator.
- How much should I tip?
- Customs vary: 15–20% is typical in the US, 5–10% in much of Europe, and some countries include service in the bill. The tip mode lets you try any percentage.
