About this tool
Merged reports, scanned contracts and exported slides often arrive without page numbers, which makes printing and referencing awkward. This tool draws a number onto every page using the PDF's built-in Helvetica font, so the file size barely changes and the text remains selectable and searchable.
You can start counting at any number, skip a cover by choosing the first page to number, and use placeholders: {n} for the current number, {total} for the last number and {pages} for the physical page count. Numbers are placed relative to the page edges with the margin you set, so mixed page sizes are handled correctly.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I skip the cover page?
- Yes. Set First page to number to 2 and, if the cover should not count, keep Start counting at 1.
- Which characters can the format contain?
- Latin letters, digits and common punctuation. The built-in font does not cover scripts such as Cyrillic or Arabic.
- Will the numbers print?
- Yes. They are ordinary text drawn on the page, not annotations, so every viewer and printer shows them.
- Does it work on encrypted PDFs?
- Password-protected files must be unlocked first with the Unlock PDF tool.
