About this tool
The SI unit of pressure is the pascal: one newton per square metre. It is tiny in everyday terms, so kilopascals, hectopascals and bars are used instead. A bar is exactly 100,000 pascals and a hectopascal equals a millibar, which is why weather maps use both names for the same value.
Imperial and legacy units survive in specific fields. Tyre pressure in the US is quoted in psi (pounds per square inch), blood pressure in mmHg, aviation altimeters in inHg, and one standard atmosphere is defined as exactly 101,325 Pa. All factors here follow those definitions.
Frequently asked questions
- How many psi are in a bar?
- One bar is 14.5038 psi. Conversely, 1 psi is 0.0689 bar or 6.895 kPa.
- Are bar and atm the same?
- Almost, but not quite. One standard atmosphere is 1.01325 bar, so a bar is about 1.3% less than atmospheric pressure at sea level.
- What is the difference between torr and mmHg?
- A torr is defined as 1/760 of an atmosphere; a millimetre of mercury is defined from the density of mercury. They differ by less than one part in seven million, so they are interchangeable in practice.
- What is the correct tyre pressure in bar?
- Most cars run between 2.0 and 2.5 bar, which is 29 to 36 psi. The exact figure is printed on the driver's door sill or in the manual.
