JPEG and WebP compression discards detail the eye cannot see. Quality 75 is the sweet spot for photos: usually half the size of the original with no visible difference. The target size option runs a search across quality levels to land just under the limit, which is what forms and marketplaces asking for “under 200 KB” need.
PNG is lossless, so re-encoding a PNG rarely makes it smaller. Choose WebP as the output format for the largest savings while keeping transparency, or JPEG for photos that must open everywhere. Reducing the dimensions is often the biggest saving of all: a 4000-pixel photo displayed at 1200 pixels carries ten times more data than needed.
Frequently asked questions
- Will compression reduce the quality?
- Slightly, in ways that are usually invisible at quality 70 or above. Compare the download with the original and raise the quality if you notice artefacts.
- How do I compress an image to 100 KB?
- Enter 100 in the target size field. The tool lowers the quality step by step until the file fits. If it still cannot reach the size, reduce the maximum width as well.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. Everything runs in your browser using the Canvas API, and metadata such as location is stripped in the process.
- Can I compress many images at once?
- Yes. Select several files in the picker; each one gets its own download link and the total saving is shown at the bottom.
