About this tool
HEIC is the container Apple uses for photos since iOS 11. It stores images with the HEVC codec, which halves the file size compared with JPEG at the same quality, but Windows, Android, many websites and older software cannot open it. Converting to JPG is the easiest way to share or upload those photos.
This converter runs the open-source libheif decoder compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. The decoder is downloaded once (about 3 MB) and cached. Each photo is decoded, drawn at full resolution and re-encoded in the format you choose; the quality slider controls the JPEG or WebP compression. EXIF metadata such as the capture date and location is not carried over, which is often what you want before sharing.
Frequently asked questions
- Are my photos uploaded to a server?
- No. Decoding and conversion happen entirely in your browser. The only download is the decoder itself, which contains no photo data.
- Why is the JPG larger than the HEIC?
- HEVC compresses more efficiently than JPEG. A quality setting of 80 to 90 gives files close to what a camera would produce; lower it to shrink them further.
- Does it keep the photo's metadata?
- No. Location, date and camera details are dropped, so the output is safe to share. Use a dedicated tool if you need to preserve EXIF.
- Can I convert several photos at once?
- Yes. Select as many files as you like; each is converted in turn, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.
- My file says it is not a HEIC image.
