About this tool
The difference is shown two ways. The calendar view counts whole years and months first, then the days left over, which is how people describe ages and anniversaries. The totals count the elapsed days directly and are the right figures for deadlines, rentals, subscriptions and interest periods.
By default the end date is not counted, so Monday to Wednesday is 2 days. Tick the option to count it when both ends belong to the period, as in a hotel stay or a contract. Adding months keeps the day of the month whenever possible and clamps to the last day otherwise, so 31 January plus one month gives the end of February.
Frequently asked questions
- How many days are there between two dates?
- Subtract the earlier date from the later one. The tool does this on the calendar, so leap days and month lengths are handled automatically.
- Are weekends excluded from the weekday count?
- Yes. Weekdays count Monday to Friday only. Public holidays are not excluded because they differ by country.
- What happens when I add a month to the 31st?
- The result stays in the target month: 31 January plus one month is 28 or 29 February, and 31 March plus one month is 30 April.
- Does the calculator handle leap years?
- Yes. All arithmetic uses the real calendar, so 29 February is counted where it exists.
