The browser's own decoder reads whatever it can play — MP4/AAC, MP3, OGG, WebM, WAV and usually FLAC — and the samples are re-encoded as MP3 at the bitrate you choose or written as 16-bit PCM WAV. WAV is lossless and large; MP3 is small and lossy.
Downmixing to mono halves the size of an MP3 and is the right choice for voice recordings, interviews and phone calls, where a stereo image adds nothing. Because everything runs locally, there is no upload limit imposed by a server and no copy of your recording left behind.
Frequently asked questions
- Can it output FLAC, AAC or OGG?
- No. Browsers can decode those but cannot encode them without a large extra library, so the output is MP3 or WAV.
- Why is my WAV file so large?
- WAV stores uncompressed samples: about 10 MB per minute in stereo at 44.1 kHz. Use MP3 for sharing.
- Does converting MP3 to MP3 lose quality?
- Yes, a little, because it is decoded and re-encoded. Convert from the original source when you have it.
