Ideal Weight Calculator
Enter your height to see the ideal weight by the Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas, their average, and the weight range that falls within a healthy BMI.
These formulas were built for drug dosing and assume average builds; the BMI range is the better guide for most people. Not a medical diagnosis.
About this tool
“Ideal body weight” formulas were developed for clinical use — drug dosing, ventilator settings — and each adds a fixed amount per inch above five feet. They differ by a few kilograms, which is why several are shown together with their average. Hamwi is the oldest (1964), Devine (1974) is the most widely used in medicine, Robinson and Miller (1983) were fitted to insurance data.
None of them account for frame size, muscle or age, so the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) is shown as a broader target. Treat the numbers as a reference, not a goal; body composition and fitness matter more than any single figure.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do the formulas disagree?
- They were derived from different populations and purposes. The spread of a few kilograms shows how approximate the concept is.
- I am shorter than 152 cm — is the result valid?
- The formulas are defined from 5 feet upward; below that they return the base value and are less reliable.
- Is this suitable for children?
- No. Growth charts are used for people under 18.
