About this tool
There are two conflicting conventions. Drive manufacturers use decimal prefixes where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, while operating systems historically report binary units where 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. That 7.4% gap is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB in Windows.
The IEC standard fixed this by naming the binary units separately: kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte and tebibyte, with the KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB symbols. macOS and Linux now report decimal units; Windows still labels binary units with decimal names.

- Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
- The manufacturer counts 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; Windows divides that by 1024 three times and labels the result GB. The same bytes, two naming conventions.
- What is the difference between MB and MiB?
- A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes — 1024², about 4.9% larger.
- How many bytes are in a gigabyte?
- One billion (10⁹) in the decimal convention, or 1,073,741,824 if you mean a gibibyte.
- How many bits are in a byte?
- Eight. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second, storage in bytes, which is why a 100 Mbps link downloads at about 12.5 MB/s.
